Calming the Storm In Your Relationship

Put two men together with their own sets of needs, values, personality traits, and life histories/experiences and you have a fertile ground for potential differences to cause clashes. This is normal and a necessary precursor for growth in your relationship with your boyfriend or partner. Anger is a common emotion that emerges during conflict. While conflict and anger are normal aspects of building and maintaining a relationship with someone, there are right and wrong ways to manage them. This article will address some ways to defuse anger in your disagreements with your lover to ensure a more positive environment to go about negotiating your differences. Anger Management 101 Its important to realize that when two people are angry with each other, very little of productive significance will come from these interactions because emotions are high and listening skills tend to be overshadowed by defensiveness. Though clich, the statement Anger is ok, its what you do with it that counts is very pertinent here. During conflicts with your partner, you are ultimately responsible for your own feelings and anger. Your partner does not make you angry; you choose how you are going to react, regardless of the contributing factors. The goal is to create an atmosphere where you and your boyfriend can have a constructive communication session free of volatile emotions and where you each can feel heard equally. No More Drama One of the most effective ways to defuse an angry situation is to call a Time-Out. In much the same way that children are disciplined with Time-Outs to calm down and regain behavioral control, we adults also benefit from this type of cool-down period as well. The strategy issimple, but only works if you and your partner agree to its execution beforehand and follow through with it to completion. Whenever you feel your anger flare-up to the point where you are unable to be attentive to your partner or be fully present, announce your need for a Time-Out. Before leaving, schedule a time that you and he can reconvene to address your issues then. Reactivity can damage relationships, and by postponing your response until after youve had a chance to regroup and center yourself, youre increasing your chances for being able to communicate more effectively. Youre also not avoiding the problem, just delaying it until both of you can more readily attend to the issue at hand. Its also important not to follow each other once a Time-Out has been called because this defeats the purpose; respect your partners need for space and feel reassured in the knowledge that you will discuss your issues at a later time. In essence, when you call a Time-Out, you are really saying to your lover, I care enough about you and our relationship to discuss this issue at a later time when Im able to really listen to you and hear your needs and concerns. My anger right now interferes with that ability. This communication technique, which is commonly taught in couples therapy, works best when applied consistently. More Anger Coping Tips 1. Identify your personal triggers to anger.Pay close attention to the body signals you receive that alert you to anger arousal, the situations that upset you to help highlight patterns, and the thoughts you have that fuel anger and emotional upset. 2. Practice relaxation techniques (deep breathing, visualization, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, etc.) and dont forget the importance of regular exercise in managing stress. 3. Distraction techniques can be helpful during your Time-Out, such asjournaling, reading a book, listening to music, playing video games, talking to a friend, taking a hot bath, going for a walk, etc. Do something self-soothing. 4. Develop affirmations and positive self-talk to help coach yourself through difficult anger-producing situations. 5. Try writing your partner a letter before you have your talk to discharge negative emotion and perhaps develop a better perspective on the situation that upset you. Destroy the letter when finished. 6. Get in the habit of expressing your needs and feelings directly and assertively in as close to the moment as you can. Stuffing feelings only leads to a stockpiling effect of unfinished business; this, in turn, creates hidden resentments and can take a toll on your health and relationship. Diet isn’t the only thing study subjects did to lose weight. Most studies included exercise regimens. So any weight loss could have been due to exercise and not to diet. Many people in diet studies lost weight, gained it back, and went back on a diet before the end of the study. Such patients would be counted as having long-term weight loss when they simply lost weight only for a short period of time. Why don’t diets work? There are two issues. The first is that it’s just plain hard for people to change their eating behaviors. Lifestyle change will work if you have realistic expectations, good support, and choose a plan that you can stick with — a plan that will give you moderate change over a long time. And the second reason is that even if you do succeed at a diet, the rule of diminishing returns comes into play. Rule of Diminishing Fat Storage Is a Natural Survival Mechanism. The body’s ability to efficiently store fat began as a survival mechanism when our human ancestors were hunter-gatherers. Human beings lived in an environment that had no quick and easy sources of food. Early humans needed some kind of physical means to store energy. Is that all?
Im sure a lot of business owners think that really is all there is to the design industry that serves them and the many designers that populate it. In some cases (for some designers) that really is all there is to it they dont operate on many other levels other than to make their designs professional, pretty, and eye catching. However there really are other aspects that must be considered when you commission a design to develop the brand image for your business, a couple of these are explored in more detail now; 1. Target Market;
Recently I was approached by a company interested in brand design; their product and service was one that should be targeting both men and women, and yet when I was shown the design they had received already for another designer I immediately noted some glaring issues with it. The design itself was eye pleasing and on the surface of it a less experienced person may observe that it was a professional effort; but the designer had produced something which featured a stylized woman as the central figure within the logo and not only that despite the stylized nature of the image, she was clearly of oriental heritage. I quickly pointed out to the customer that when ones target market is male and females and not women only, that to gender bias ones logo design is counter productive, and even worse to possibly alienate even more people by making the character a particular ethnicity when your product is targeted at all nationalities. A creative must think, think, think, and then and think some more about the target market when they are designing. To enable that before they start designing, they absolutely have to ask the business owner about the business; who are the customers, how will the product or service be sold to them, and so on. 2. Colors & Tones
A long time ago now I wrote a very popular article entitled the The Relationship Between Colors & Sales Ive long since populated the piece across the internet and you can thus read it on many websites. Although as creatives we dont need to enslave ourselves completely to the rules of color psychology, any designer working on a project should always keep this in mind. In addition to considering the psychological effect certain colors have on mood and behavior, which is well documented by the marketing industry, one needs to consider the socio-economic dynamic of the target market as this has some bearing on the tone of the color scheme chosen. For instance its not uncommon for my clients to ask for a bright color scheme for their brand design, but this doesnt always suit their target market; its known that low income groups are attracted to bright colors and thus if you dont wish to attract low income groups a bright color scheme isnt right for your brand design regardless of what you like as an individual. When your designer goes to work and you review concepts its vital to appreciate the design isnt supposed to necessarily appeal to what you like, its supposed to appeal to your target market and this may not necessarily be the same thing as your own favorite colors. These are just a couple of important areas that must be considered by your designer before they start work on your brand development, some of the other areas include; - Ensuring the design will work well whether printed billboard sized or business card sized. - Making sure the company name is easily readable. - Ensuring the design is neither too tall in height, or too wide horizontally; disproportionate designs can be more difficult to incorporate into layouts for print such as fliers, stationery, brochures and so on; this means these items may not look as good as they should. Much of this advice can also be applied even when you already have your brand design established and have moved on to developing this further with your marketing materials. Its important that the designer working on your printed stationery and marketing materials appreciates the need to be sympathetic to the brand theme already established, and also has sufficient skill and experience to bear in mind that designs created must appeal to the target market. Thinking Like a Thin Person

By Anthony Bloch During the past month I’ve been observing thin people and what types of things seem to set them apart from heavier people. This observation wasn’t scientific but I learned a lot from my thinner friends. The first thing I noticed is that thinner people seem to be more active. Many of my thinner friends work out on a regular basis. They also seem to do a lot of walking. I noticed that some of my neighbors will walk to their mail boxes instead of stopping at their mailbox with their car on the way home.
My thinner neighbors will park their car in their garage and then walk the short distance to the mail box. I also observed that thinner people tend to use stairs and not escalators or elevators when at all possible. Thinner people seem to relish in the opportunity to be active. In a nutshell they aren’t lazy. They’re active. The second thing I noticed is that thinner people tend to eat healthier foods and smaller portion sizes. They tend to order salads or grilled foods and seem to shy away from fried and greasy menu choices.
Instead of getting a 12 inch sub, they tend to order a 6 inch sub. Those were the two major things that I noticed while observing thin people. As a result I’ve been trying to think and act like a thin person. I’m starting to feel like a thin person psychologically and I hope that this way of thinking translates into a real lifestyle change for me. It’s really the little things that separate heavier people like myself from thinner people but those little things can add up to a big difference in the weight department. Or maybe you go from work to the gym to jump on the treadmill for 40 minutes then home. No matter when you fit your workout in, you are to be commended youve stuck to it. SO why isnt the weight coming off like it did when you first started your new workout routine. Everything is the same. Cardio 3 to 5 days a week. Weight training 2 to 3 days a week. Your diet is still in tack (despite the PMS breakdown in the chocolate abyss). If you are still doing everything the same and you cant seem to drop those last 10 lbs then you cant drop those last 10 lbs because you are still doing everything the same. (I know I just reverse the sentence but read it again and youll catch on if you didnt the first time.) Your body is a wonderfully efficient machine. Everything from your head to your toes adapt to your environment, your activities and your lifestyle. Your exercise regimen is no different. Here is the scenario. Your Story… You began the new year with a new found dedication to running. After all, you need to drop those extra pounds. So you go for a 45 minute run 5 days a week and weight train in the gym 2 times a week. In January and February the pounds fell off. You consistently left 2 even 4 lbs some weeks, chocking on your dust as you laughed your way all the way to the clothing store. But here we are in April and the scale hasnt moved since the beginning of March. What happened? Your Bodys Story When you began your program, your body worked hard to keep up with the new intensity and duration of your exercise regimen. As a result it burned energy (calories/fat) to keep up. Then one day as it accompanied you out the door and began picking up speed, then it said to its self. Oh Ive done this plenty of times before. In fact I am good. I am so good at this now that instead of burning 200 calories on this run, I can do the same run and only burn 150 calories. So it runs with you and indeed it proved that it could do the same activity and burn less calories doing it. Your body has succeeded in doing what it does best…become efficient. Ah ha! Eureka! Now you know. So what to do about it. Throw your body a surprise party and call it Cross training. Cross training is a great way to condition different muscle groups, develop a new set of skills, and reduce boredom that creeps in after months of the same exercise routines. The term cross training refers to a training routine that involves several different forms of exercise, and/or exercise intensity levels.
Get up tomorrow and instead of running for 45 minutes, jump on the bike and take a spin. Instead of doing 45 minutes of a moderate intensity run. Kick it up a notch and do 20 minutes of intense interval training (fartlek run will do as well) Providing different challenges in a workout forces the body to move out of its comfort zone and the body must work harder to complete the activity Resulting in more calorie burn. More eating the dust off from the bottom of your shoes as you leave those pound behind. But thats not the only benefit of cross training. If sports are your passion cross training can actually help you prevent injury and overuse syndrome. For most sports enthusiasts, cross-training is a beneficial training method for maintaining a high level of overall fitness and thats not all Cross Training Reduces exercise boredom Allows you to be flexible about you training needs and plans (if the pool is closed, you can go for a run instead). E-Letters Should be Part of Your Marketing Plan

They are both time and cost effective, reaching all of your clients and as many potential clients as you have permission to solicit via email. I am a huge advocate of e-letters; our company sends one out every month and we receive additional work because of contacts made through our e-letters. Developing e-letters is part of our client services. So why have I recently talked clients out of using e-letters for their businesses? Because e-letters are not a quick fix solution. They should be one tactic in an established marketing strategy. Have a marketing plan
If you dont know where youre going and what youll say when you get there, dont bother communicating. You need to have your companys branding messages developed.

Mission The basis for your brand is what your company provides to customers and why should they care.
Visual elements Logo, identity, tagline, colors. All the graphic elements that stimulate customer recognition and support your Mission.
Message planning The marketing messages you want to focus on for the next 12 24 months.
Tactics The specific action points that will communicate your brand and message. Getting your brand in the door
One of the big reasons I believe in email as a marketing or branding tactic is because it supports visual recognition. Certainly content is important, but recognition allows the receiver to acknowledge the brand and let the message in. Lets give it a quick test right now. Think about Coca Cola. Unless you have never seen their logo, chances are that right now you are visualizing the white script on red background. You let the brand in immediately and now youre ready for the message. Well-executed e-letters work the same way. Your letters identity is the first image your readers will see and a positive reaction gets you in the door to tell your story. Maximize that opportunity:
Consistently use a masthead, including e-letter name that immediately connects clients to your company identity.
Use photography and other graphic elements to create excitement. A picture is still worth a thousand words!
Design a layout that is appealing and a format for articles thats easy on the eyes. Font type and size as well as colors used are a major issue in viewing any written Internet communication. Take various systems into account and test on as many as you can until you are sure your e-letter will display equally well on most servers.

Once your e-letter achieves entry, give the reader something of value. Do not use an e-letter for blatant advertising or you risk losing subscribers. Reports are available from all e-letter service companies and you should regularly review them to measure the effectiveness of this marketing tactic. We looked at click thrus to develop future content and bounces to correct addresses. Even more importantly, we listen to the feedback we receive and react to it. Dont embark on an e-letter campaign unless you are able to maintain it. We have clients that distribute monthly, bi-monthly and even quarterly. How often is not as important as consistency. If you dont have a brand identity or marketing plan, if you dont have the ability to develop content, if you dont have a permission based mail list, dont start an e-letter campaign. Career Advancement: Using an Unexpected Job Offer to Bargain for a Raise

By Bonnie Lowe Many of us are happy with our current jobs, but a little bump in salary would usually be nice. What would you do if a headhunter called out of the blue and offered you a position at a different company–for more money? Would you be tempted to use that job offer as a bargaining chip for a raise or promotion? It’s a risky move, but one worth looking into… carefully. The first thing you need to do is decide how appealing the new job offer is. How much better is it than what you have now? Would you seriously consider leaving your current company and starting over with a new employer? What would need to change in order for you to decline the new offer and stay where you are? A promotion or raise? More responsibility? Before you talk to your boss, decide what you want, and what you’re willing to do if you don’t get it. If you really don’t want to leave, don’t pretend you do just to negotiate a raise. Your boss may call your bluff! Just explain that you received an unsolicited offer that you are not seriously considering, but which has prompted you to want to discuss your future. If you are undecided about whether to take the new job or not, discuss the possibility with your boss in a noncommittal way. You might say, “I have been contacted about a new opportunity, and I’d like your advice on figuring out what’s best for my future.” Discuss the terms of the other job, and what you’re most interested in–the salary, other benefits, more responsibility, etc. Give your boss the opportunity to make a counteroffer, but do not threaten to leave if this doesn’t happen. No one responds well to blackmail. Keep this in mind–even if your bargaining efforts are successful and you get what you want and decide to stay, your boss may now have a lesser opinion of you. Your loyalty may be in doubt, and even if the negotiation process was very nonthreatening, your boss may resent having to go through the process at all. Consider the consequences for either outcome before you use a job offer as a bargaining chip!
